Approaching an intersection I see a man waving; catty-corner outside the subway entrance a woman is waving back in the man’s direction. Two people, it seems – distant friends, lovers, colleagues, relatives – have found each other amidst the swirl of rush hour pedestrian traffic, like a scene in a 40s Hollywood film. I wonder briefly about their rendezvous: where do they plan to go? What will they talk about? What is the nature of the relationship that’s brought them to this meeting point in Dumbo? Then I notice a taxi pulling over to the street corner where the man’s waving – he’s hailing a cab; I swivel my head: the woman is not waving, rather she’s been having an animated discussion on the phone.
