In the subway a middle-aged woman, dressed in a clashing outfit of bold-print fabrics and hot pink accessories, is bent over a book. While using one elbow to clamp the book precariously on her lap, she holds a corn-on-the-cob, while with her free hand she plucks single corn kernels off and eats them, one by one, for the entire duration of my trip.
