I’m taking part in a protest march that began in Midtown, and has followed a winding path through Herald Square, the Flatiron District and the Village, and is now nearing its destination of Washington Square Park. Organized by a coalition of groups and led by a drum core, the march has a militant, cacophonous energy, and the entire length of the march people on the sidewalks have been gawking, taking out their phones and photographing or videotaping the noisy procession. When we pass by the corner of 8th Street I notice a woman on the sidewalk who at first seems to be pointing her phone at the march as well – but as we move further down the street I see that she has a different subject: three young women, posing for what appears to be a post-graduation photo. All three have the same haircut (long, straight black hair), are wearing matching red gowns, and are smoking cigarettes.
