At the corner of 14th Street and University, a frail-looking Black woman is crossing the intersection in a wheelchair, using one leg to ‘step’ and pull herself along, an inefficient and awkward method, and when she’s halfway across the street the light changes. Cars start nudging forward, and it looks like she’s going to be stranded. A well-dressed white woman, observing the situation from the sidewalk, jogs valiantly into the intersection and takes the wheelchair handles from behind and begins pushing. The woman in the wheelchair, suddenly incensed, turns around and cries, ‘Get your fucking hands off my wheelchair!’ The white woman, stunned, stops pushing and sheepishly retreats. The Black woman resumes her labor-intensive propulsion through oncoming traffic, mumbling angrily to herself.
