Two young women sit down opposite me on the subway: they are a study in opposites. One woman is dressed entirely in off-white, and her outfit looks as if it might have come straight off the loom of some puritanical commune where the wool is hand spun and left undyed. Her hair too, which is artfully akimbo, approximates white, only with a slight silvery tint – a hue that suggests carefully-cultivated (and very expensive), au naturel nonchalance. Her neighbor meanwhile is dressed in black and charcoal gray. Her skin is pale and her makeup heavy; her straightened hair is dyed midnight black. Her clothes are skin-tight and exude a kind of femme fatale allure – danger and aloofness. Both are immersed in their phones, naturally, and the respective models are white and black.
