UPS stores. During the pandemic lockdown people have become dependent on shipping and logistics services in unprecedented, apparently desperate fashion. The evidence can be seen at neighborhood UPS stores, where lines start early in the morning and sometimes stretch the length of an entire block. People line up, masks on, packages in hand, six-foot social distancing rule observed, and wait. And they do this without the benefit of the usual kvetching that offers at least some camaraderie in the face of shared suffering, characteristic of New York line-waiting. Instead, hidden behind masks and kept physically separate, they are left to stew in their own juices. The practice of waiting in line for a basic service that is, under normal circumstances, at best taken for granted, at worst seen as a minor headache, is now a multi-hour commitment. And what are all these packages that people suddenly so urgently need to send?
