I’m leaving my apartment for work on a rainy day. After locking the door I head down the hallway, and when I arrive at the stairwell I nearly run into a man rushing down from a floor above. ‘Sorry,’ he mumbles as he slips past me. I notice that he’s carrying a large umbrella, and this reminds me I’ve forgotten mine. It’s raining hard and I’m wearing only a light, permeable jacket. I double back to my apartment, and as I’m unlocking my door I hear the door of the apartment to the left opening. A young woman exits. She seems to be in a hurry – she hastens to lock the door behind her and then is off down the hallway before I’ve had a chance to offer her a greeting. I’ve never seen her at that apartment before – perhaps she’s a visiting relative? In fact, I realize, I’ve only encountered the neighbors in this apartment a handful of times since I’ve lived in the building, so it’s entirely possible that she’s been there the whole time too… I retrieve my umbrella, lock my door, and head back into the hallway. This time when I’m entering the stairwell I nearly run straight into the young woman: she too has doubled back – apparently she’s forgotten her umbrella as well!
