In the remote, Greek village of Tropeaia, where R and I have come to shop for some supplies, a group of high school children is clustered in the parking area next to the city square. The group consists entirely of girls, and they’re shouting and giggling, gathered around something that looks like length of string stretched out across the pavement. They move out of our way as our car approaches, and I say to R, ‘They must be making a TikTok video.” This seems like a foregone conclusion these days – a group of kids performing an activity in public must be a ‘challenge’, meant to be recorded and posted for likes on social media. After we park and get out of the car I see that the string is now being held taught by two girls separated by a couple of meters; their friends, one after the other, are bending backward as they try to pass beneath the string. It’s a game of limbo, and there’s no evidence of video recording anywhere to be seen.
