It’s early evening and M and I are returning from a walk along the waterfront in Sunset Park. As we’re approaching 4th Avenue we notice a man dancing in the median that separates the two directions of traffic. He’s shirtless, and his belongings are piled up on the median’s concrete barrier, which suggests he’s been in this spot for a while. As we start to cross the avenue, the man performs a series of erratic dance moves, executes a forward roll, then thrusts his legs dramatically into the air. He takes a couple of ‘steps’ with his hands to find his balance, then, muscles tensed, somehow maintains this perfect handstand without the slightest hint of movement the entire time we’re crossing the avenue.
